Custom orthotics are insoles designed for each patient’s specific needs.
In Ontario, chiropodists and podiatrists are the only regulated professionals licensed to prescribe and dispense custom orthotics. They have extensive training in assessing for, designing, and overseeing the manufacturing of custom orthotics.
Because each person’s feet are unique, custom orthotics are classified as medical devices – and very different from off-the-shelf insoles.
Insurance Coverage for Custom Orthotics
OHIP typically does not cover custom orthotics.
The good news is that most workplace benefits plans do provide coverage for these devices and related visits & assessments.
Some specific documentation is required for these claims:
- Prescription from your chiropodist or physician stating the reason your require orthotics
- Detailed biomechanical assessment and gait analysis performed by your chiropodist
- Orthotic lab information, manufacturing process, and materials used
- Detailed invoice, including the date of dispense
We recommend reviewing your coverage for custom orthotics before your appointment to ensure there are no surprises!
